More Thoughts On JBOSS Certification

Before I spend time, effort and money on a certification, I always do a little informal research. I check the top job boards to get a feel for the market demand for a given skill. Prior to my interview with Marc and his pals, I checked what the boards had to say about demand for JBOSS app server skills versus skills in the top two commercial offerings. Here are the results, as of 11/04/02:

Dice
     Flipdog.com
JBOSS 23 JBOSS 20
Websphere586 Websphere 200+
Weblogic425 Weblogic 200+

Careerbuilder.com

Monster.com
JBOSS 11 JBOSS 22
Websphere 184 Websphere 681
Weblogic 159 Weblogic 491

Websphere and Weblogic experience currently seems more useful if you're seeking to win contracts or obtain full time employment. So should you spend the money on the JBOSS cert? I spoke with someone who got certified a few months back. He said that he had yet to make his money back, but that he got a lot of value and knowledge out of the training. Does he think JBOSS certification is worth it overall? His words: "the jury is still out."

CB:
Can you tell me a bit about the JBOSS certification and the affiliate program?

BS:
It's basically a way for us to grow our business from a first level perspective... people out in the field working directly with customers, doing implementations, doing project-based work. We don't really want to own project based-work. We don't want to grow our business in that capacity. But we recognize the need for the use of our brand. And these people [the affiliates] are backed up by our core [development team]. So you go through training. You get certified. You get the ability to use our mark... We actually push a lot of business down to our affiliates... Mostly because we can't necessarily service every [business opportunity] that we're seeing now.

CB:
So a consultant interested in the program would have to pony up...?

BS:
...A five thousand dollar investment. $3,250 of that goes to the cost of training... 4 days with these guys [points to Marc, Scott]... And the rest of it goes towards our certification [as a consultant].

CB:
How much customer demand is there for work done by your affiliate partners?

BS:
The program has only been around for about four months, five months, and most of the early adopters have made their money back already... We make zero outward-bound sales efforts at this point. We plan on changing that... so we think the demand will obviously go a lot higher, but it's nothing we can predict, accurately.
