Reviews : Enforce Coding Style with CheckStyle :

What Checkstyle Offers

The Checkstyle is capable of handling a wide range of things starting from the coding conventions to the minute details of javadoc. Because of this vastness, it is beyond the scope of this article to discuss all of them. I shall try to cover some important and mostly needed items from each section. The rest can be referenced in the Checkstyle documentation.

Checks for Coding Problems

Several modules are defined in this domain. Some of them are:

AvoidInlineConditionals

This module checks for the use of inline conditions such as: String s = (a ==null)? null:a; If you do not like this sort of thing in your code, run a check for this module.

EqualsHashCode

This module ensures that whenever the equals() method is overridden for an object, the hashCode() method is also overridden.

InnerAssignment

if you do not like variables to be assigned within logical operations such as int I = Integer.parseInt(s = "1"); then run a check for this module.

Checks for Class Design

This module contains checks for different class design elements such as the visibility of the class and its attributes.

VisibilityModifier

This module defines whether you are allowed to have a certain type of visibility with its members. For example,

<module name=”VisibilityModifier”>
     <property name=”protectedAllowed” value=”false”/>
</module>
This config does NOT allow the class to have protected members.

FinalClass

If a class does not have a public constructor, then in Java you cannot subclass it. This module checks that such classes are declared final.

Checks for Imports

This module checks for redundant import statements, doing * imports.

AvoidStarImport

This module checks for .* style of imports.

UnusedImports

This checks for various things such as:
  • Unused import statements
  • Duplicate import statements
  • imports from the same package
