Review: Chart FX 6.2 (Beta) for Java

by Drew Falkman

Ever heard the saying "Where there's data, there's a graph"? Okay, so I just made that up but it certainly is true. And when it comes to graphing, Java devlopers need to turn to third-party applications since there's nothing built into the Java API. Software FX's Chart FX is one such third-party applicaiton. Chart FX is also a charting engine that delivers graphs in numerous formats online, a chart design tool, and more. It's proclaimed to be the easiest way to integrate charts into Java and J2EE applications.

Introduction

It seems that most Java applications these days require some form of graphical reporting. The truth is that most applications have become so data-intensive that the only way to really get a handle on that data is to look at it visually. Chart FX transcends most other graphing tools with the flexibility of its engine. The charting API is extremely intuitive, as well as deep. Using Chart FX gives you a high degree of visual customization, allowing you to deliver your graphs in numerous formats—including an interactive format using .NET on the client side, integrating data from a number of different sources.

Setup and Installation

Installers for Chart FX are available for Windows, MacOS, HP-UX, Solaris, Linux, or you can use a generic Unix installer. Installation on Windows was a snap and appears to be the same for other environments as well. The only requirement for Chart FX is J2SE 1.3 or higher and J2EE 1.3 or higher. Chart FX for Java has been tested in the following Java servers:
  • Tomcat 3.x, 4.x and 5.x
  • IBM WebSphere 4.x and 5.x
  • BEA Weblogic 7.x and 8.x
  • Macromedia JRun 4 and ColdFusion MX
  • Sun ONE Web Server and Application Server 7 and 8
  • Oracle AS 9 and 10
  • Orion Application Server
  • JBoss
