Software Review: AppletEase
by Scott Clark
When you visit a site such as the Java Boutique, you're likely to be overwhelmed at the sheer number of applets that are available for you to use on your Web site. And although the Java Boutique provides the general applet parameters, a common request from visitors is for help adding a particular applet to their Web site. Wouldn't it be nice if there was an application that would show you all of the applet's parameters, let you test the applet, and then generate the HTML code so you could add the applet to your pages, with no muss and fuss? Of course it would be great, and we've uncovered a Java-based application that is supposed to do just that: AppletEase from SoftEGO.
AppletEase 1.0
SoftEGO
URL: http://www.appletease.com/
Price: $40
System Requirements: Pentium, 16 MB RAM, 1.5 MB free disk space, JVM (Java Virtual Machine)
Before you can use the AppletEase application, you need to install the Java Virtual Machine version 1.1.6 on your system. SoftEGO suggests Sun's JRE (Java Runtime Environment) 1.1.6, which is available for download from http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.1/jre/index.html. You'll have to go through the simple wizard-driven installation procedure, and then you must restart your computer for the JRE to work properly.
Once you've done that, you can download the AppletEase application demo and install it on your computer. It includes a simple batch file that you can use as a shortcut to start the application. Once I installed the JRE mentioned above, I was able to start the AppletEase application with no problems.
