Sun Microsystems, Inc. Announces the Availability of the Jini*(TM) Technology Starter Kit v1.2.

Performance improvements and additional helper utilities further enhance the efficiency and adaptiveness of Jini network technology.

Palo Alto, Calif. * December 21, 2001 * Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that the Jini * Technology Starter Kit v1.2 is now available. Jini network technology ("Jini") is a freely available, open architecture that enables developers to build network-centric services - whether implemented in hardware or software. Networks using Jini technology are highly adaptive to changes that typically occur in dynamic computing environments. These adaptive networks can massively scale, attain high quality-of-service levels and readily accommodate evolution within a network. The v1.2 starter kit provides developers with the features they need to build Jini clients and services that may perform faster, act more reliably and increase efficiency.

In concert with the release of the starter kit v1.2, the Jini Technology Core Platform Compatibility Kit (TCK) v1.2A is being made available to align with the new features in the starter kit.

CAPITALIZING ON JINI NETWORK TECHNOLOGY

The significance of this release is found in three new features: Multiple services on a single virtual machine, multi-threading, and simultaneous network access choices.

Using the Jini(TM) Technology Starter Kit v1.2, developers may realize significant resource savings by running multiple Jini services within the context of a single virtual machine. This allows multiple services to share common memory resources which could bring about a reduction of total memory usage.

Helper utilities included with the v1.2 starter kit have also been enhanced to use a multi-threading model. The Jini lookup discovery, service discovery, join and lease management utilities can all execute independent tasks in parallel which may result in improvements to overall system reliability and performance.

Additionally, the v1.2 starter kit release gives developers direct control over choices about which network to use in situations where multiple network connections are available. This feature provides for simultaneous access to multiple networks enabling developers to build Jini services which more effectively access and use other network resources. DELIVERING CAPABILITIES FOR THE JINI COMMUNITY*

The new starter kit and TCK releases will both replace previous versions after a 120-day period of dual availability. The latest version of the TCK can be used to meet compliance requirements immediately and must be used to meet compliance requirements after the overlap period.

The Jini Technology Starter Kit v1.2 and the Jini technology Core Platform Compatibility Kit v1.2A are available on the Web site at, http://www.sun.com/software/communitysource/jini/download.html

The evolution of Jini technology continues to be driven by the requests for improvements and enhancements identified by the community of developers using Jini. The Jini community is open to all developers to research and discuss their developmental work related to Jini technology. For example, the Jini community held a Web cast on December 12, 2001 where 443 participants logged on to the event. Community members shared information about how they were implementing Jini in innovative ways and shipping products/solutions that meet their customers business needs. More information on Jini technology can be found at http://www.jini.org/ and http://www.jini.org/.
