Lantronix Combines Thin Server and Jini Technology Concepts in Network-Enabling Platforms

IRVINE, Calif., April 12, 1999 - Lantronix today announced support for the Jini technology initiative based on a common purpose of network-enabling any "smart" object, particularly microcontroller-based devices that populate automation, communication, security and data collection environments.

While Lantronix is currently participating in the first large-scale effort to implement Jini - the Jini Printer Group - the company also foresees the technology as applicable to its line of universal thin servers, which are marketed as external product, board and software license solutions for Ethernet/Internet connectivity.

"The value proposition of both Lantronix and Jini is to network-enable anything," said Fred Thiel, president and CEO of Lantronix. "Our products provide the universal protocol and management functions, while Jini provides a Java programming environment and the universal "plug-and-work" drivers that accelerate custom application development."

Jini technology, developed by Sun Microsystems Inc. and available as a public license, is being adopted as individual and consortia solutions for dynamically distributed network services. Its basic appeal is unlimited applications, widespread availability and ease of implementation, according to Thiel.

"The driving force in our OEM and end-user markets is time-to-market," he said. "The combination of network-enabling thin servers and Jini code will create a platform for development of Internet applications in the shortest possible time frame."

Lantronix first Jini initiative is on behalf of its line of print servers that allow multiple users to share printers anywhere on an Ethernet network via a wide range of protocols.
