Converting to Java Version 1.1 or 1.2
To change this component so that it takes advantage of the Java 1.1
event model and compiles cleanly under Java 1.1 and 1.2, surprisingly few
changes are needed.
First, make the following changes to make it compile cleanly
The readLine() method of DataInputStream is deprecated. The JDK
documentation suggests replacing it with BufferedReader.readLine().
To create an instance of BufferedReader rather than DataInputStream, use
BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in));
PrintStream should be replaced by PrintWriter (which uses the same
constructor and also has a println method).
Porting to the Java 1.1 event model can be done as follows:
The only coding change needed in emc.java would be a new method called
stopthis:
public void stopthis(){
ActionEvent ae;
ae=new ActionEvent(this, AWTEvent.RESERVED_ID_MAX+1,
"SMTPDONE");
parent.actionPerformed(ae);
this.stop();
}
Then rather than calling the Thread stop method elsewhere, the stopthis
method would be called and would send an event to the parent. The
changes to the parent would also be rather easy.
The driver would need to implement ActionListener, then the action method
would need to be replaced by the actionPerformed method:
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent event){
String strCommand=event.getActionCommand();
if(strCommand.compareTo("SMTPDONE")==0){
emc emailer=(emc)event.getSource();
//clear message and give feedback about
error status
taMessage.setText(emailer.strError);
//remove this from the vector, assumes
a vector is used so that multiple messages can be sent without waiting
veSMTP.removeElement(emailer);
}
