Using Servlets

The first step to using servlets is installing a web server that supports the Java Servlet SDK. In the last article, I ended by saying we would go over Sun's Java Web Server because it was the defacto standard reference implementation.

My how Internet Time does fly though!

While Sun is still supporting their Java Web Server, they have also entered into partnership with Netscape to support the Netscape web server which, conveniently supports a Java Servlet engine. Additionally, the reference implementation is now a joint cooperation between The Apache Group and Sun called the The Jakarta Project.

While the Jakarta project is evolving (at the time of writing, it was still in Beta), Sun has also released the JSWDK (Java Server Web Development Kit) which is a small web server that supports the Servlet SDK and Java Server Pages (JSPs). Because of the JSWDK's emphasis on debugging and development, we will focus on using this implementation throughout these articles.
