Books and Compilers
Q
I am following your articles on Java published on the javaboutique site with interest.
Will the articles be available in downloadable form (such as adobe acrobat) or is there a book available?
I'm trying to learn Java from ground level so a way to refer back to things would be helpful.
Also in order to write Java do I need a compiler program, and if so where can I get one from?
A
I don't have any plans to release the articles in PDF or any other format other than HTML.
JavaBoutique has no such plans either, although you can save and print the pages directly from the site.

There is definitely no book on the horizon as I am already doing a book on Perl/CGI and ASP at the moment and could not possibly take on another one :(
Take a look at our new Book Review section to see summaries and ratings of the newest Java Tutorial books.

As for what you need to write and compile Java, you need to get a copy of the Java Developers Kit from www.javasoft.com.
You probably want to get a copy of JDK 1.02 and JDK 1.12 so you can write applets in either JDK.
To compile a java applet, you use the program named javac which comes with the JDK.
