Polymap

Image Mapping with Polymap

The concept of Polymap is simple: using the application-specific fields in GIF files to store mapping information. Thus the mapping information, in the form of polygons, is tightly coupled with the image. To use Polymap:
    - Add polygon objects in the image of your choice: The shareware Polymap Toolkit (Windows version), which provides an easy way to do so.

    - View Polymap images: Polymap images are still valid GIF's, and can be read by most GIF viewers. The Java Polymap Applet shown here takes advantage of the Polymap data to provide a highly interactive image mapping environment. The HTML code for the Java applet looks like:
      <applet code=PolyMap.class width=416 height=325>
      <param name=img value=tourmap.gif>
      <param name=baseurl
      value=http://www.whitehouse.gov/WH/glimpse/tour/html/>
      </applet>
    where PolyMap.class is the Java Polymap Applet class, width and height are the image dimensions, and img's value is the Polymap GIF file. The optional baseurl specifies the "prefix" to be attached to the URL associated with each Polymap object. For example, if the URL of an object is tt.htm, and the baseurl is http://www.ttt.edu/, then the resulting URL is http://www.ttt.edu/tt.html. If baseurl is not specified, the baseurl of the current page will be used unless the URL already specifies a protocol, i.e. starts with http://, gopher:// etc. Other optional parameters are
      <param name=target value=main>
      <param name=highlight value=off>
      <param name=color value=FF00FF>
    The target parameter specifies the frame to load the URL of a Polymap object when the object is clicked. The highlight parameter is default to on. If highlight is off, the applet will outline Polymap objects with the color specified by the color parameter, which takes a value of the form of RRGGBB (each of the RR, GG, and BB may be 00-FF). The default color is 0000FF, or blue.

    - Interact with Polymap images: With the Java applet above, you will experience interactive outlining/highlighting of the predefined polygon objects, and displaying of their names/URL on the status bar as the mouse cursor moves over them. Clicking on the outlined/highlighted object will load the object pointed to by its name/URL.
